Anti-Germany protest in Athens

Protesters in Athens used Nazi emblems during a theatrical demonstration by citizens and artists over Germany’s role in Greece’s debt crisis.
Organisers are angry about the pressure being put on their country to implement austerity measures.
The group Porta-Porta, or Door-to-Door, is led by film-maker Dimitris Kollatos.
“Germany has taken over the power of Greece. Our grandfathers and fathers fought Germans and suddenly the Germans are coming and buying Greece at humiliating prices. We are not carrying out privatisation. We are selling off the country and we say no.”
The use of Nazi emblems to draw attention will inevitably be seen by some as offensive, but organisers say it is Germany’s treatment of Greece that is insulting.
The demonstration, near the German Embassy, coincided with a visit by Chancellor Merkel’s Economy Minister Phillip Roesler. He is there with a group of businessmen looking at investment opportunities which he says will profit both countries. He also said rich EU members need to help the poorer ones.
